ADULT: Wingspan 34-42mm. Dark brown to greyish-black the forewings have a prominent black mark similar to the Hebrew letter nun, emphasised by the adjacent straw-coloured triangle. The hindwings are cream in color. CHRYSALIS: Pupates in cocoon below ground. LARVA: Light brown or green with black spots and a white line along each flank. Feeds on Buddleia, Ragwort and Nettle. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light, sugar and comes to flowers. HABITAT: Hedgerows, gardens, woodlands, marshes, parks and coastal. FLIGHT PERIOD: Resident. Double brooded - May to June and again in August and September. STATUS: Resident. Common throughout. |
